University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), Feb. 10 (Xinhua) — Pan Jianwei, Zhao Bo, et al., in collaboration with bai Chunli group of the Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), have synthesized triatomic molecules in a mixture of ultracold atoms and molecules for the first time, making an important step towards the research of ultracold atom-molecule quantum simulation and ultracold quantum chemistry.The results were published in the world s leading journal Nature on The same day.Quantum computing and quantum simulation have powerful parallel computing and simulation capabilities, which can not only solve the computing problems that classical computers cannot handle, but also effectively reveal the laws of complex physical systems, thus providing guidance for the development of new energy and the design of new materials.Highly controllable ultra-cold quantum gas can be used to simulate complex physical system which is difficult to calculate, and it can be used to study complex system accurately and comprehensively. Therefore, it has a wide application prospect in chemical reaction and new material design.Ultracold molecules will open up new ideas for quantum computing and provide an ideal platform for quantum simulation.However, it is very difficult to prepare ultracold molecules by direct cooling because of the complexity of internal vibrational rotational energy levels.The development of ultra-cold atom technology provides a new way to prepare ultra-cold molecules.Molecules can be synthesized from ultra-cold atomic gas using lasers, electromagnetic fields and so on, bypassing the difficulty of cooling molecules directly.The synthesis of triatomic molecules from the mixture of atoms and diatomic molecules is an important research direction in the field of synthetic molecules.A research team from the University of Science and Technology of China first observed Feshbach resonance of atoms and diatomic molecules at ultra-low temperatures in 2019, providing a new opportunity for the synthesis of triatomic molecules.In this study, the team of USTC and the team of the Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) successfully observed the rf synthesis triatomic molecular signal on the rf loss spectrum of sodium-potassium molecules and measured the binding energy of triatomic molecules near the Feshbach resonance.This result opens up a new path for the study of quantum simulation and ultra-cold quantum chemistry.(Anhui Daily reporter: Chen Wanwan)
